1974 a county in its own right. Here in 1552 was founded the Society of Merchant
Venturers who were largely instrumental in laying the prosperous foundations of
the British Empire. It was from Bristol that John Cabot set sail in 1497 to
discover Newfoundland and North America.
Bristol is an interesting and distinguished city and hosts an outstanding
programme of events through the year including the Harbour Regatta and the world
famous International Balloon Festival. Visitors can see a play at the historic
Theatre Royal , watch a West End musical at the Hippodrome and listen to the
best in music at the Colston Hall.
